Mortons Golf Day 2013

Mortons MailingFriday 17th May 2013 witnessed the 14th annual Mortons Golf Day, held at the Forest Pines Hotel and Golf Spa.

Playing over the Forest and Pines layouts on a warm overcast day, the golf course proved very challenging. In fabulous condition given the extremes of a very dry spell followed by days of rain and sun, it was a credit to the green keeping staff, although the greens were not up to their usual speed and left many scratching their heads.

It was the regular golfers who mastered the scoring with Bryan Read in third place, Ken Calderwood (Local World) in second, missing out on a countback to this year’s champion Nik Evans from Barrelfield Media.

Nearest the pin was won by Mick Woods (Yorkshire Golfer) while the longest drive went to Mike Pennington of the Hull Daily Mail.

The winner of the Barry Leatherland Memorial trophy, for the winning Mortons staff player went to Steve Scott.

Following an excellent lunch Ian Fisher thanked all for their attendance and for supporting the event and looked forward to seeing everyone once again in 2014.

Mortons targets national print award

Prestigious media awards could be heading the way of Lincolnshire-based printer Mortons after the announcement of nominations for this year's Newspaper Awards.

The Horncastle company is shortlisted in four of the 18 categories – Newspaper Printer of the Year, Regional Newspaper of the Year – over 25,000 copies, Niche Product of the Year and Print Innovation of the Year.

The awards will be announced in a glitzy ceremony at London's Hilton Hotel on April 24.

This year's awards have the theme Celebrating Success in News Media, and Mortons' operations director Steve Wickwar said he was delighted, and the nominations reflected the hard work and commitment of the Mortons print team.

"The awards recognise production excellence and innovation. We are constantly working hard alongside publishers and the fact we have been nominated in these categories is a great reflection on the work we are doing, the progress we have made and the hard work from every member of our team."

The Newspaper Printer of the Year category reflects Mortons' work on the Hull Daily Mail, Church Times and Home Extra, the Regional Newspaper of the Year – over 25,000 copies is also for the Hull evening newspaper, Niche Product of the Year is for work on Fishing News while Print Innovation of the Year is for the Hull Daily Mail translucent wrap.

Gary Cullum, director of The Newspaper Awards, said: “We've had a near record level of entries this year, and that, combined with the fact each award is sponsored, indicates that the industry is really beginning to show signs of recovery after what can only be described as a very torrid time. The night of April 24 promises to be a great event when we can celebrate all that is good in the newspaper industry.”
