Former Newspaper Society deputy director Norman Walker OBE has died.

Mr Walker was deputy director of the NS retiring in April 1992 after receiving an OBE in the New Year Honours for 1991.

He worked for the NS for 18 years after working in the film industry.

In 1976 Mr Walker took on the joint role of deputy director and head of industrial relations. He was a founder member of

the Socio-Political Committee of the International Federation of Newspaper Publishers and continued to serve as its

vice chairman following his retirement.

David Newell, News Media Association chief exectuive, said: “Norman Walker was a true servant of the newspaper 

industry and the Newspaper Society, and a man of charm and great ability. 

“He gave strong leadership to the industry as it embraced new technology and reformed its employment structures.”
