Mortons Print has been named Regional Newspaper Printer of the Year at the prestigious national Newsawards 2017.

The Horncastle-based company wowed judges with the high quality of its print work on a range of weekly and specialist newspapers.

Chairman of judges Gary Cullum said Mortons Print was the “clear winner” for judges, who described the selection of newspapers put forward by the firm as the “stand out” entry.

He said: “The titles on the judges’ table demonstrated vibrant colour, strong and consistent black density, and good contrast in images.

“The newspapers were a pleasure to pick up – and the entry was head and shoulders above the rest.”

Praising the bright white paper used by Mortons Print, he added: “This was newspaper printing at its absolute best.”

Newspapers printed by Mortons Print also won highly commended and commended awards in the Niche Market Newspaper of the Year category – with their “first-class” printing being highlighted in judges’ comments.

The award presentation evening at the Lancaster London, in Lancaster Terrace, London, on Wednesday, April 5, was attended by Mortons print director Steve Wickwar, commercial manager Ken Calderwood and operations manager Jim Blyth.

Steve said: “It was a great team effort and a testament to all the hard work that has been put in over the last few years. It just goes to show what can be achieved using the latest technology and the skills of a highly experienced print production team.”

The newspapers that formed the main Mortons Print entry were the Newark Advertiser, Driffield & Wolds Weekly and Teesdale Mercury, and the niche titles were Photography News, Cage & Aviary Birds, Fishing News, the Hackney Citizen and Kensington, Chelsea & Westminster Today.

The Regional Newspaper Printer of the Year category was sponsored by Agfa Graphics.
