HEAVY equipment and the staff who operate it have relocated to a new home at a Lincolnshire print and publishing firm.
Mortons Mailing, a division of Horncastle-based Mortons, has left its old premises in Holmes Way and transferred to the company’s main headquarters in the town’s Morton Way.
The move was made possible by the sale of a huge 50 ton Goss Universal press which was dismantled and boxed up towards the end of last year before being transported 8500 miles to a new home in Cambodia.
The coldset press had been used by Mortons for 15 years but was superseded by newer technology.
After months of careful planning, it took just one weekend to move most of the Mailing operation, including poly-processing machines and other hefty kit, to its new location by forklift truck.
Everything had been set back up again by Mortons engineers and was ready to use by the Monday morning.
Mortons Mailing has two poly-processing lines which put newspapers or magazines into polywrap bags, print addresses onto them and add any inserts required. This process is necessary to bag up subscription copies ready for posting and for newspapers due to be sold on supermarket shelves or via university campuses where only self-contained items are acceptable.
The division also has a Kalmar envelope inserting machine which automatically puts letters or leaflets into envelopes and seals them. Other tasks, such as paper folding and adding cover-mounted stickers are done by hand.
Production manager Dean Wilkinson said the Mortons Mailing move had been a great success: “The two poly-processing lines have been moved into position, with the enveloping machine to follow shortly.
“Also as part of the move the original stitch and trim line will be relocated in the Goss Presshall, along with a new compactor replacing the old machine.”
Discussions are currently ongoing about the future of the former Mailing premises.
